“Well…they’ve shown you their favor after all.”
Okay so like taking a moment to focus not on Ardyn on this (strange for me I know), ive fangirled over this scene countless times but i just feel the need to point out the fact that Ignis fully shrinks back away from Ardyn. Not just steps away but steps back steps down and tries to put himself away from him, and thats important. Alot of people go on about how Ignis was uncharacteristically impulsive in the episode and like this here is a huge argument against it? Because the way he’s pulling away, his shoulders drop, hell you can even see the swallow catch in his throat- he’s afraid. He saw what happened to Ravus and even if he cant properly see Ardyn right now save for through the magic coursing through him- he knows normally a person shouldn’t be able to close that distance, save for someone who can warp like Noctis. He’s already put together what he’s going against and he’s not just afraid he’s fucking terrified. Just as quickly as it happens though he squares up, he pulls himself together, and despite being afraid he fights a battle he knows he has little and less chance winning because there is no time to make a better plan, this is the best and ONLY option that there is for Noctis to survive, and that is ENTIRELY in character of him. If it were Gladio or even Prompto it would still be in character, because Ignis has on multiple occasions shown himself to be something of a lowkey martyr, he sacrifices his wants, his needs, for the good of his friends and comrades, and king. So does Prompto but in a far different way. Ignis he wasn’t being rash, he wasn’t being impulsive, and he wasn’t being stupidly fearless. He was doing the only thing he could do, which was stand and fight a loosing battle so others could survive.
Alot of people have called Ignis the kings sword, as a balance to Gladio being the shield and i’d disagree. Gladio is the shield, of that there is no doubt. Prompto, prompto is the one who goes face first at a fight for his friends, let us not forget he shot Ardyn in the head without a moments thought when he saw him a threat. I’d call Prompto the sword, and Ignis was much more the willing sacrificial lamb for the greater good.
