nice how mrs. lovett and sweeney are both described as ugly and middle aged in the libretto (sweeney in particular being overweight) yet everyone and their mother is casting them as sexy thirty year olds with heavy eye makeup

part of the horror of sweeney todd is that mrs. lovett doesn’t look frightening or anything, she looks like middle aged auntie or something. no one would suspect a thing except (SPOILER FOR A 1979 MUSICAL) lucy barker. i absolutely believe HBC!Lovett would be the accomplice of a serial killer. patti lupone no doubt has killed people. angela lansbury’s lovett is that much more effective because she looks like a sweet old lady.
