Hi all: my parents’ house burned down in the Camp Fire that destroyed Paradise, CA. This is the home we moved to when I was a teenager, that my younger siblings grew up in, that I visited every Christmas since leaving for college. Thankfully, my parents have great insurance, savings, and family to stay with in other parts of California, and my dad will still have his job and his pension.
A lot of families have not been so fortunate. Paradise is (was?) a predominantly working class community, and many of the people affected by the fire were from there. Which means, unlike my family, they not only lost everything, everyone they know lost everything, too.
If you’re moved to help, I recommend this gofundme. It’s organized by the English teachers at the high school – several of whom I had and one of whom was a classmate of mine. So much of what I learned about writing, I learned at this school, from these teachers. The proceeds will go to students who have been impacted by the fire.
If you’re unable to contribute, I ask that you please share.
Much love. ❤
