Guys. No matter what happens in state and local elections tonight, no matter how you feel about your Republican governor that was just elected or whatever it is, this is huge. We just put a federal check on Republicans. The House of Reps in Democratic hands can demand Trump’s tax returns. It can prevent ridiculous legislation in the realms of healthcare and social issues from being passed. It’s not everything, but it’s all we needed to protect this beautiful country for the rest of Trump’s presidency. I’m so, so proud of the beautiful people of this country and grateful for all the hope that’s been renewed tonight. THANKS FOR TURNING OUT, VOTING AND NOT GIVING UP- I know it was hard. On to tomorrow! 🇺🇸💖
I had to explain this to some of the kids I work with at the HS. Before rehearsal the other day, one of them was talking about how everyone who can needs to vote (which was literally none of the cast bc they’re all under 18), and he’s so excited to be able to vote in the next election. And that voting was important because of 45.
And then one of the girls said, “but, he’s not running. Why does this election even matter? Like what does it even do?”
And I rotated 180 degrees on the piano bench and was like
And then explained checks and balances.
Does this just not get taught in schools anymore? Or do we just ignore it? I mean, I know I’m from an urban inner-city, but I absolutely remember learning about checks & balances in civics class. Do they even have civics classes anymore?
But the point is they all learned something.
Like I have to constantly tell some of them to hush when teaching vocal parts, but the kids who were there were completely attentive to what I was saying when explaining the branches of govt and why it’s important for all power to not rest with one political party.
Tre (who made the initial “everyone vote!” comment) was like, “Ya just thought we were gonna learn harmonies today, but Miss Prib up here dropping CIVIC KNOWLEDGE.”
