some people may prefer “bi” because:
- they learned about bisexuality before they knew about pansexuality
- they
want to acknowledge that their attraction to different genders can feel
differently in quantity and/or quality (=they have a preference for one
gender or feel more romantically attracted to one and more sexually attracted to another gender)- they are attracted to more than one gender but not all
genders (i.e. they may “just” be attracted to men and
non-binary people but not women)- the term is more well know = (hopefully) less explaining to do when coming out
- it’s easier to find resources and an active offline community under the label “bisexual”
- just because it’s a personal preference
other people may prefer “pan” because:
- it was invented to challenge the gender binary and rightfully criticised the now outdated “bi means two = attraction to just men and women”-definition of bisexuality
- they may actually want to explain what it means and thus don’t mind that it’s less well known and people may ask more questions about it
- the attraction they feel doesn’t differ from one gender to another (thus the phrasing “attraction regardles of gender”)
- they prefer pan-puns over bi-puns
- whatever, it’s a personal preference.
Furthermore there are a lot of people who use both labels interchangably.
