You are a retired assassin. You moved, changing all of your contact information, so that your clients can no longer bother you. For three years you live in peace with more than enough money to spare. Then you receive a letter asking you to take over as the head of school for The Assassin’s Academy. At first you toss the letter aside, annoyed that someone found you in retirement. Yet, you have to admit there is a part of you that is intrigued by the offer.

Logic was one of the greatest assassins of all time. He had little regard for emotions, both his own and others,
making him able to kill his targets with no hesitation. He was intelligent and quick-thinking, as implied by his name. He was able to make plans with little
to no flaws, his targets never managing to flee. And when it came to the actual
execution, he had natural skill.

However, he had left all that behind. He’d changed his name to Logan Sanders, moved away to Florida, gotten a job as a high school teacher and started a brand new life. He’d even gotten a boyfriend, local bakery owner Patton Ferrier.

Three years he’d been living happily with Patton. He was even hoping to pop the question soon.

That was until the letter arrived.

Logic,

Greetings! How’ve you been? It’s been a while, hasn’t it?

I’m just writing to inform you of some bad news. The previous head of school at the Assassins’ Academy has passed. However, we heard that you have some experience with teaching, and you were one of the best in the business back in the day. So, we were wondering if you would like to take over the role.

Hope to hear from you soon,

– Princey

Logan stared at the letter.

‘Anything important in the post, Loganberry?’ Patton called from the kitchen.

‘…No.’ Logan tore the letter and chucked it into the nearby trashcan. He couldn’t give up the life he’d created. He loved Patton and didn’t wish to ruin what they had. If Patton found out Logan used to kill for a living… He’d never be forgiven.

But, Logan couldn’t deny… part of him was very intrigued.

Princey rubbed his forehead on frustration. “Any luck?” Anxiety asked him.

“No! He hasn’t responded to my letter.”

“Should we pay him a visit ourselves?”

“No, he’s too smart, he’s probably moved already.”

“What are you gonna do about it?”

“Time to bring in the big guns.”

“Princey n-”

“Call in Deceit and Sleep”

An hour later the duo walked in. “Took you long enough.” “We make it a point to always be fashionably late darling.” Deceit shrugged and pointed at his partner, “what he said.”

Logan walked outside with a trash bag dragging behind him, he noticed a moving truck in the next yard. “Patton.” He called,

“Yeah Lo?”

“It appears we have neighbors.”

“Oh! Let’s go say hi!”

“Now?”

“Yes!”

They walked over to the neighbors house and knocked on the door. A smiling personage answered, “Hello! I’m Remy and this is my boyfriend, Decelyn! Decy come say hi!” A scarred person came to the door, “how nice of you to stop by.”

Logan’s heart practically stopped at the sight of their new neighbours.

‘Hi, it’s nice to meet you!’ Patton smiled. ‘I’m Patton, and this is Logan. We live next door. We just wanted to come say hi and welcome you to the neighbourhood.’

‘Well, that’s very nice of you,’ Decelyn replied. ‘Would you like to come in for a drink?’

‘Thank you!’ Patton took Logan’s hand and pulled his still shocked boyfriend inside after their neighbours.

Patton talked cheerily with Remy and Decelyn. However, Logan rarely contributed. He was watching their neighbours carefully. There was no doubt: they were Sleep and Deceit, two other assassins he had known back when he was working.

He’d met Sleep when they were both hired by different people to kill the same person. They’re plans had disrupted each other, both jobs almost being ruined and both their identities almost being revealed. However, Logan had managed to save it in the last second.

If that first impression seems bad, it’s nothing compared to when Logan and Deceit first met. Let’s just say, the scars on Deceit’s face didn’t just come from nowhere.

‘Um, would one of you mind showing me to the bathroom?’ Logan requested.

‘Of course. This way.’ Decelyn stood and left the room, Logan followed behind. Once they reached the bathroom, Logan grabbed the other by the collar, dragged him into the bathroom, closed the door, and slammed Decelyn against the wall.

‘What the fuck are you doing here?!’ he growled.

‘Nice to see you too, Logic,’ Decelyn smirked.

‘I asked you a question! I’m retired, what reason would you have to be here?!’

‘For a job.’

‘A job…? Wait… Princey sent you here, didn’t he? Look, you can tell him that I’m not giving up the life I’ve built for this stupid Assassination Classroom!’

‘It’s an academy… but, just think about it?’

Logan sighed. ‘You can stay here as long as you want, but it’ll always be a no.’

Meanwhile, in the Kitchen:

“So why did you two move here?” Patton asked Remy.

“Well, we haven’t seen an old friend in a while, and we were planning to move in together already. We heard he lived here, so…”

“Oh! That’s so sweet! How did you guys meet?”

“Uhh, work. How did you two meet?”

“Well, Lolo moved into the city and started visiting my bakery often, and we started talking and, well, stuff happened.” Patton punctuated with a smile.

They sat in silence for a bit until Remy spoke, “You both seem nice and I was wondering if you’d like to stay for dinner?”

“That would be great!”

Dinner was mostly filled with Patton and Remy talking, with an occasional input from Decelyn and Logan. Of course Decelyn and Logan’s interactions were entirely death glares and such.

Logan and Patton waved goodbye and left. As soon as the door closed Sleep turned to Deceit and said one phrase,

“we can’t ruin this for him.”

‘What?! But we have orders- !’

‘I don’t care! Did you see how happy Patton was talking about Logan? What they have isn’t just some act Logan’s putting on to erase his past, it’s real.’

‘First off, he’s Logic, not Logan. Second of all, we have a big pay check with our names on it for simply getting Logic to become a headmaster. I’m not letting you take that away from me when it should be so simple!’

Deceit and Sleep glared at each other.

‘I won’t do that to Patton or Logan.’

Sleep turned and headed upstairs to his room. Deceit growled.

If it was Logic and Patton’s relationship that was in the way… then they just had to get rid of Patton.

‘You okay, Loganberry? You seem tense…’

Logan and Patton were led in bed, arms wrapped around each other.

‘I’m fine, it’s just… work. It’s stressful,’ Logan half-lied.

‘I’ll make you some hot chocolate to help you relax,’ Patton smiled. ‘With whipped cream and marshmallows!’

Logan sent a small smile as his boyfriend left the room, before sighing. What was he going to do? He knew what they’d do if he kept turning down the job offer: they’d tell Patton the truth. Then his boyfriend would definitely break up with him, and maybe even go to the police.

Either way, the happy ending Logan had worked so hard for would be stolen from him.

He was suddenly broken from his thoughts by the sound of a scream from downstairs.

Patton…

Logan raced down the stairs two at a time, mind racing.

Deceit wasn’t stupid. Patton was what was keeping him here. Patton was the roadblock. So Patton would have to go. In hindsight, Logan winced, it was painfully obvious. He skidded into the kitchen, fists clenched.

But he didn’t see what he expected. There was no Patton cowering under the gaze of a hardened criminal. No gun trained on his boyfriend. No corpse on the ground.

Instead, there was a shattered hot chocolate mug from where it had been dropped. A scar-faced man, eyes wide, frozen. And Patton, dear, sweet, lovely Patton, pinning Deceit against the wall, holding a knife. “You. Are not. Taking me away from my family,” he spat through ground teeth. “Logan is the only good thing that I have had in years, years, and by god, I am not going to go back to who I was because some idiot wanted my boyfriend killed. Back. Down.”

Logan gaped, slack-jawed. ‘Patton. Clearly hiding something, and has been for a multitude of years. How did I fail to see this? An obvious oversight on my part. But what is he referring to? Think, Logic, think! He knows that Deceit is an assassin. Clearly, he must then also know about our community, and the main players in it. But how? It’s unlikely he was anyone’s client. No client I’ve ever had would ever have had the guts to stare down Deceit – especially if they knew who he was. An informant? But it doesn’t make sense. Being part of this community would completely go against the moral values of… of…’

Logan’s eyes narrowed. “You,” he hissed.

Patton jumped, dropping his victim. “Lo… gan? I… shucks, I didn’t know you saw this…” he fumbled. “I can– I can explain this all, I swear!”

Logan stalked forward, adjusting his glasses. “No need,” he shot back, words clipped. “I did always wonder how you could manage to never get injured in the kitchen. I chalked this up, however, to your skill as a baker. On the other hand, I’ve seen you trip over obvious obstacles multiple times.”

Patton shrank back, bumping into Deceit. “Lo, what’s going on?”

“When I first came across this scene, it became apparent to me that you were involved in this lifestyle,” Logan continued, running a hand through his hair. “But how? A client would never threaten physical violence. You don’t have the heart to be an informant.” He came to a stop inches away from his boyfriend, peering at him like he’d never seen the man before.

“But that’s really what this is about, now isn’t it? Your heart?”

Patton looked up at him in horror, realizing that he knew. “Logan, you’ve gotta understand, I had a reason for everything I did–”

“Of course you did.” Logan locked eyes with his partner. “Morality only ever killed those who truly deserved it. Didn’t he, Patton?”
