It baffles me that there are people who don’t seem to have read things properly and that don’t understand headlines are designed and worded in certain ways to get a reaction. Dumbledore not being explicitly gay in this movie doesn’t mean that his sexuality is gone all together, it just means it won’t be the main focus, and that it isn’t going to be as touched on in this next movie. There are still three other movies to go more into depth about his relationship with Grindelwald, so its not rushed

Not to mention that we are taking into account the very Era it’s based on. We’re talking about a time where homosexuality is not exactly a walk in the park(much like certain places today-deja vu?) and we’re coming down to noticing little details. Because sexuality isn’t something to be flaunted. Today’s music and arts are all about liberation and projection, and that’s fine but- at a time where discretion was everything, the subtle hints give all the more of a sense.

I’ll find it very displeasing if hints aren’t dropped no matter how small or discreet- because sexuality is a part of your movements and reactions, your tone and view of the world. It shapes you but it doesn’t necessarily define you.

I have high expectations for this movie emotionally. Because everything is not what it seems and by all means I want that represented. I need the emotionally charged glances and touches as with any other cishet character. It’s not about making it pointed out- its about making it casually present in every aspect of its reality.

You know, Berlin Germany was called the Gay Capital of Europe in the 1920s. In the 1890s there were gay magazines published in the city and in the 20s, the Schöneberg neighborhood was considered a gay village (similar to how The Castro is SF is)

London had several gay bars in the 1920s and 30s, often raided by the police. And euphemistic adverts in select newspapers mentioning walt whitman and oscar wilde for gay men to meet each other, are well documented from the time.

As for New York, there was a club for queer people founded in 1895 called the Cercle Hermaphroditos, which seems to have been popular with (what we would know call) trans people. There were several well known gay bathhouses in New York in the 20s and 30s as well.

Now, of course sodomy laws, police raids, and being pathologized/institutionalized were all very very real threats too.

BUT to act like all gay men lived in the shadows, hidden and secretive, is totally devoid of any understanding of history. People have been out and proud and fighting and loving FOREVER, and the 1920s were no different.

This movie isnt set when Dumbledore and Grindelwald were together, but about 20 years later. But their history is IMPORTANT context for this conflict. And “the time period” is not an excuse to not include it.

Also, let me just add, because this shit pisses me off, that JKRs research and understanding of American history is piss poor at best. The shit on Pottermore about the US is fucking asinine and, at times, downright insulting. (The native american bits especially. But ALSO THERES AN AWFUL LOT OF WHITE FOLKS IN 1920S HARLEM IN THESE MOVIES.)

Like, these movies are going to 100% sidestep and ignore the very real world realities of American racism and Jim Crow era segregation AND the actual demographics of HARLEM RENAISSANCE ERA HARLEM, but yall wanna use real world homophobia to deny queer fans ANY actual queer characters in the franchise?! Its transparent.
