“On Tisha B’Av, we read the book of Lamentations, which is filled with the gut-wrenching choices that families made in the worst of circumstances. This year, our laments are in solidarity with the laments of immigrants and asylum seekers.”
Rabbi Mike Rothbaum, spiritual leader of Congregation Beth Elohim in Acton, and one of the organizers of the Boston-area Tisha B’Av service, said, “Tisha B’Av is a stark reminder that even the most beautiful of Temples collapse under the weight of what the rabbis call sinat chinam, groundless hatred. Persecution of the very people who grow our food, build our towns, and care for our most vulnerable is not only cruel – it’s tragically senseless.”
