So, watching the trailer again… and again…. and uh, and again – I noticed a thing in one of the scenes. And it got me to think.
So, here’s the scene:
Toothless looks VERY much unconscious here. The Light Fury comes to catch him, and presumably save him. Roll back a few seconds, and we see this:
Hiccup’s desperately holding onto the Light Fury, both look very much concerned, worried, even scared. Hiccup, clearly in distress, tells the Light Fury to “save him”, we can safely assume he means Toothless. When she catches Toothless, we see Hiccup no more, meaning he had let go of her.
The question is, what happens after the Light Fury catches Toothless? Where do they go? And where do they leave Hiccup and the rest of the gang? What about the dragons? Will they follow Toothless, the now alpha?
So I was wondering – is this how Hiccup and Toothless get separated, only to get reunited many years later? That’d be this scene here:
Notice that Hiccup’s outfit changed again. He has the same belt Stoick had, he has the cape too, so he clearly was on Berk meanwhile, with access to materials and tools needed to craft that outfit. Toothless is seen without his saddle, suggesting Hiccup hasn’t flown Toothless in a while when this scene happens. From his body language, I assume he’s fairly emotional here, with a warm smile (that gives me the feels) at the end. Could Hiccup be looking at the Light Fury for the first time since he asked her to save Toothless and had let go? For the first time in what looks like good 5-6 years?
So the idea is that something happens to Toothless, and Hiccup, unable to save him, asks the Light Fury to do so, before letting go. Just like Dean DeBlois said that this movie will be about the ability of letting go of one’s insecurities, and of those who follow their destiny. Hiccup follows the destiny of being the Chief, Toothless follows the destiny of being the Alpha. Hiccup gives up the possibility of being at Toothless’ side when he’s saved and as he recovers from what likely is an injury, only to increase Toothless’ odds of survival. He trusts the Light Fury to take care of him, where ever they (the dragons) go. The friendship that lasts for a lifetime, they’re brothers until death, no matter if they’re together or not. Then Toothless, the Light Fury and the dragons disappear somewhere, but in the end, after a few long years, Hiccup is reunited with Toothless and others one more time.
