hey there. any idea if Google docs is going to delete smut that’s not shared? or only if it’s reported? I mean, man, that’s where I beta/get others to beta my Fic

thebibliosphere:

Not a clue. I have heard from some friends that google drive has removed some of their (nude) photos from their drive, regardless of whether they are shared or not, which makes me think a lot of these changes are being done to target sex workers. As does a lot of the skype ToS changes too. But who knows, we will see where all of this is going.

Porn of any kind tends to be criticized more harshly than written erotica these days.

I don’t mind telling you all, I’m none too happy with this move towards mass censorship. It reminds me very much so of what it was like growing up in the internet days of yore when any and all content that was gay in anyway was considered nfsw, regardless of whether or not any of said content was actually explicit or not. They told us it was “to protect the children” then too. Entire forums and fandom archives were wiped out overnight if they were reported often enough to the right people. You never knew when the fandom would have to flit to another web hosting service over night.

Ao3 still seems too good to be true, for me. Stories that I’m particularly proud of, or ones I love from other writers, still get printed out so I can retain a physical hard copy stashed away. And I’m not even that old, in terms of fandom history and lived experience.

Censorship of this nature is a slippery slope that starts out seemingly like a pebble atop a mountain only to turn into a landslide that takes out the sleeping village below. This combined with net neutrality and a few other things are hm, well. I’m not happy. Lets just put it that way.
